Welcome to Greenock Pottery. My name is Maria Whitehead and I love pottery. There is a family tradition too - my great grandfather was one of the last traditional potters, who in pre-war Czechoslovakia made everyday kitchen pots and pans, as well as decorative pieces for the homes of poor as well as well off families. The pots were round, with transparent glaze so the clay would keep its beautiful red colour, decorated with simple white patterns. You can still find some finished pieces and his old throwing wheel in the Museum of Pottery in Slovakia. I am only a humble follower, learning something new every day. I find it relaxing. Throwing shapes gives me a huge sense of achievement and it is also really good for toning your arms! I do classes for primary school children, birthday parties, hand/foot prints and Ladies only sessions. As well as a Saturday morning sessions every month or so. Children Classes: Children will learn how to work with clay, new techniques, they can use their knowledge from history, art, books in the projects they will be working on. Birthday Parties: A party will last 2 hours, time will be spent working on a few art projects of your choice. Maximum children participating is 6. Hand/Foot Prints in the clay: Please call me to arrange a time suitable for you. Why not join up with other mums/dads to come into my studio together? Ladies Only sessions: This is an excellent way to unwind after a day work or home and create something for your house or a present for somebody you love.
